Our 100th Anniversary CelebrationA near-capacity crowd of members, friends, neighbors, and dignitaries helped Temple Israel mark its 100th Anniversary Centennial celebration on Saturday, September 17, 2011. The morning went flawlessly, just as planned by Vice President Jaime Siegel and his committee of hard workers. Rabbi presided over a lovely Shabbat service in the newly renovated sanctuary, specially completed just in the time for this event. Services were followed by speeches of congratulations from dignitaries, including State Assemblyman Dan Losquadro, Suffolk County Legislator Ed Romaine, Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter, and a representative from Governor Cuomo’s office. All had proclamations of congratulations declaring September 17, 2011 as ‘Temple Israel of Riverhead Day.’The celebration culminated as we all adjourned downstairs to the social hall to enjoy a sumptuous lunch of cold cuts, salads, and cake, followed by a presentation on early life in Riverhead delivered by Shep Scheinberg. For many, it was the first opportunity to view the completion of the first stage of our temple renovation, planned and executed by Robert Brown, Richard Israel, and Herbert Israel, among many others. The refinished and spruced-up sanctuary seemed more light, airy, and spacious than ever before; restored to maintain the traditional décor, while ensuring that everything looks ‘like new.’It was a morning and an event which will be long remembered by all those who attended. Sincere thanks to all who worked so long, hard, and tirelessly to make it happen.Read our history (download) as told by historian Carol Levin.
